TIMS Card (Trekkers' Information Management System)

TIMS exists to track trekker movement for safety and rescue purposes. It costs around $10-20 depending on whether you book independently or through an agency, and is required for the Annapurna, Langtang, and most other open trekking regions — but not inside Sagarmatha (Everest) National Park, which uses its own entry system.

ACAP — Annapurna Conservation Area Permit

Required for any route through the Annapurna region, including the Circuit, Base Camp, and Poon Hill. It costs roughly NPR 3,000 (about $23) for foreign nationals and funds conservation and community projects across the area.

Sagarmatha National Park Permit & Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Fee

Everest region treks require a national park entry permit (about $30) plus a separate rural municipality fee (about $20), both collected at checkpoints on the trail rather than in Kathmandu.

Restricted-Area Permits

Routes like Upper Mustang and Manaslu sit in politically sensitive border zones and require a special permit that can only be issued through a licensed trekking agency — independent trekking isn't permitted. These permits also carry a minimum group size requirement and cost significantly more (Upper Mustang runs around $500 for the first 10 days).
